How Christmas Eve?

Antoni, age 9, asks about Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, about the Vistula River, and Krakow's square

Dear Santa,
Czesc from Krakow. My name is Antoni and I am 9 years old. Every single Christmas Eve, no matter how sleepy I am, my whole family bundles up and walks to church for a service that starts right at midnight, and I always try my hardest to stay awake for the entire thing.
My first question is: how is Christmas Eve traditionally observed with that midnight service?
My second question is geography: what river runs through Krakow?
My third question is from school: why is Krakow's main square considered one of the finest medieval squares in Europe?
I left you pierogi, a few different kinds, and a slice of makowiec, a poppy seed roll.
Love, Antoni, age 9, Krakow, Poland
From the Desk of Father Christmas
Dear Antoni, pierogi and makowiec made for a wonderfully filling stop, thank you very much. Now, to explain that midnight tradition properly, and your other questions.
How is Christmas Eve observed with a midnight service?
That service is often called Midnight Mass, a tradition stretching back to the earliest centuries of the Christian church, when believers gathered late at night to mark the birth of Jesus, said in the Christmas story to have taken place under the cover of darkness. Over the centuries it became a beloved centrepiece of Christmas Eve in many countries, especially Catholic ones like Poland, filled with candlelight, carols, and a real sense of anticipation as the clock ticks past midnight into Christmas Day itself. Staying awake for the whole thing, sleepy as it makes you, is exactly the kind of quiet devotion families have practised for a very long time.
What river runs through Krakow?
The Vistula River winds through Krakow, past the historic Wawel Castle perched on a hill overlooking the water, a river that has shaped the city's history for over a thousand years.
Why is Krakow's main square so celebrated?
Krakow's Main Market Square, dating back to the 13th century, is one of the largest and best preserved medieval town squares in all of Europe, surrounded by grand historic buildings that survived largely intact through the centuries, giving visitors a genuine glimpse into medieval city life.
Try to stay awake this year too, and I shall see you very soon.
