Santa Explains: The Shepherds

Christmas Exclusive by Santa

Ho ho ho! Gather round, because Santa wants to tell you about some of my favorite people in the whole Christmas story — the shepherds. Now, they don't get top billing. No crowns, no fancy robes, no big speeches. But oh, what a night they had!

You see, on that holy night, there were shepherds out in the fields near Bethlehem, watching over their flocks of sheep. This was the night shift, my friends — the unglamorous job nobody fights over. While the rest of the town was tucked snugly in bed, these fellows were out in the open, keeping the wolves away and counting sheep for real.

It was dark. It was quiet. And it was probably a little bit cold — even colder than the North Pole, if you can believe that! At least I've got a warm suit and a team of reindeer. These shepherds had a walking stick, a wool blanket, and a flock of animals who are not exactly sparkling conversationalists.

And then... suddenly... the sky lit up! An angel appeared, and the glory of the Lord shone all around them. Now, I make a lot of dramatic entrances myself — down the chimney, onto the rooftop — but even Santa has never lit up the entire sky! The shepherds were terrified. And honestly? Who could blame them. One minute you're minding sheep, the next the heavens crack wide open. That'll wake you right up.

But the angel said the most wonderful words: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy, which is for all people. Today, in the town of Bethlehem, a Savior is born — and you will find Him wrapped in cloths, lying in a manger."

A manger! A feeding trough for animals. The shepherds must have thought, well now, that's a strange place to find a King. But it was a sign just for them. Plain folks, pointed toward a plain stable. No palace required.

And then — oh, this is my favorite part — a whole choir of angels filled the sky, singing praises to God! "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill to all!" Can you imagine the sound? The greatest concert in history, and the only ticket-holders were a handful of sleepy shepherds and a flock of very confused sheep.

Now, here's what gets me. When the angels left, those shepherds didn't sit around debating whether it really happened. They didn't say, "Let's wait until morning." No! They hurried — they ran — straight to Bethlehem to see this baby for themselves. And when they found Him, just as the angel said, they were so full of joy they told everyone they met along the way.

That's the spirit of Christmas right there, my friends. God didn't send that good news to the rich and the famous first. He sent it to ordinary, hard-working people doing their ordinary jobs. And those humble shepherds became the very first to spread the good news.

So this Christmas, remember — you don't need a crown to carry joy. You just need a willing heart. Merry Christmas, everyone! Ho ho ho!
